Candidates from GP2 to F1

Formula 1 ‘feeder’ series GP2 provided a fine spectacle to motorsport lovers in 2008.

GP2 logoThe past three GP2 champions went straight into F1 i.e. 2005: Nico Rosberg (Williams), 2006: Lewis Hamilton (McLaren), 2007: Timo Glock (Toyota). Also, all runners up – Heikki Kovaleinen, Nelson Piquet and Lucas di Grassi became Renault test drivers the following year. Also, those made it into were Scott Speed, Heikki Kovalainen, Kazuki Nakajima and Piquet Jr.

In 2008 the winner is Giorgio Pantano and runner up is Bruno Senna. By above comparisons it should be easy to conclude that Pantano and Di Grassi will be driving a F1 car and Bruno Senna will be a test driver for Renault. Here are a few drivers who might have a shout for a seat in F1:

Giorgio Pantano

Pantano previously had some F1 experience with Jordan but couldn’t establish his name. He is the only driver in the GP2 with previous first tier experience. He led the final standing by 12 points and certainly looks mature at times. If Pantano did move back to F1, he wouldn’t be the first guy to do it as we have seen from Glock. But the difference with Glock was that he was regularly testing F1 cars before getting a race seat. Pantano, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have attracted any attention from F1 whatsoever. I do think that it slightly unfair!

Bruno Senna

Being a relative of arguably world’s best ever driver is not easy when you are following his footsteps. But Senna is inevitably going to make it. Whether it will be this year will be to be seen. Bruno has to face comparisons to his uncle throughout his career but he is responding well. Honda has confirmed it will test Senna, but it may decide to hold onto Barichello (F1s most experienced driver). Senna along with Bourdais, Buemi and Takuma Sato are believed to be under consideration for the Toro Rosso drive.

Lucas Di Grassi

Lucas Di Grassi is currently the Renault F1 team’s third drivers. He finished GP2 season at third despite missing first six races of the season. He was mentioned to the Piquet Jr’s seat of Renault but after team retained the lineup there seems to be no interest for him. He is said to be not quick enough and no good at the wheel-to-wheel racing.

Romain Grosjean

Romain Grosjean was widely tipped to win the GP2 series prior to the start of the season. But inconsistent form could only make him finish fourth behind Di Grassi. Along with Di Grassi he is also Renault’s test driver. Another year in GP2 seems to be on cards.

Sébastien Buemi

Sébastien Buemi has the advantage of backing in the form of the Red Bull Junior Team driver development programme. It seemed like Toro Rosso were following Buemi and they will most likely sign him as their driver for 2009 season. But now other driver names have emerged. Sebastian Vettel is leaving Toro Rosso for Red Bull and an indifferent form of Sebastian Bourdais might lead another Sebastian to F1’s seat!

Who would you like to have a seat in Formula 1?
